Summer Backpack Program-One Mother’s Story

One of the most powerful moments of our Summer Backpack Program came during the first week of distribution at Central Park. A mother, moved to tears, shared how the frozen meals were an unexpected blessing. With her daughter going through a tough emotional period, the mother had missed work, leading to a reduction in her hours. As a result, while she could pay the bills, affording enough food had become a struggle. She told us, “I almost didn’t bring the kids to the park today, but I’m so glad I did. This is amazing.”

This is why the Summer Backpack Program is so critical. During the summer months, when school is out, many children lose access to the meals they rely on during the school year. That’s where Cultivate steps in, working with local schools, parks, and community partners to distribute meals to those who need them most.

In addition to our school locations, we’ve expanded our distribution through local pantry partners like the Middlebury Food Pantry and the Tolson Center. Cultivate is also coordinating meal offerings at several local parks in Goshen, in collaboration with Goshen Health and Goshen Community Schools.

The Summer Backpack Program is designed to ensure no child goes hungry during the summer months. For more information on locations and how to access the program, visit Cultivate’s Summer Backpack Program webpage.

These moments of connection and support show just how essential this program is for families in our community.

Farm to Plate with Local 4-H

If you follow Cultivate, you’re aware of the Meat Hunger Program that supplements Cultivate’s need for protein by intentionally sourcing it from local 4-H kids. As part of this program, Cultivate hosted its second annual breakfast. Attendees had the pleasure of learning about raising farm animals from dedicated 4-H students in the Meat Hunger Program. Did you know that a pig’s favorite treat is marshmallows!? Learn this and other farm facts from these hard working kids by checking out this video!

Birthday with a Purpose

Luke had an unforgettable time on a Cultivate field trip with his school earlier this year, and when his mom asked how he wanted to celebrate his 9th birthday, his answer was pure gold! He chose to bring his friends and siblings to volunteer packaging meals—turning his special day into a chance to give back. A huge thank you to Luke for sharing your birthday with us and inspiring both kids and adults with your generosity and heart!

Numbers That Nourish

These numbers reflect more than just food; they represent the lives impacted and the communities strengthened. Every pound rescued, every meal served, is a step closer to ensuring no one in our community goes hungry. We’re grateful for the support and partnership of so many donors, volunteers, and community organizations making this work possible!

This month, we’d like to recognize the incredibly generous support of grants from the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation, AEP, Lippert, and the Stanley A. & Flora P. Clark Memorial Community Trust Foundation.
